Sew Fine Threads

About Paula & SewFineThreads
Two of my favorite “hobbies” – sewing and machine embroidery have become entwined – perhaps even spun together. This process helps me explore various ways to create embroidery designs and images from artistic elements taken from natural settings and apply them to sustainable fabrics like silks, cottons or linens. Some examples have been made into tote bags, decorator pillows, bookmarks, and table linens. I often draw inspiration from the watercolors of my sister, Suzanne.

As I travel to various destinations, I take along my camera and capture the interesting interplay of light and colors, shades and highlights. At my computer I then translate these images into embroidery files, using threads with luminous sheen, metallic reflections, or other special effects. The design elements are stitched onto fabrics with colors that enhance the designs. These embroidered fabrics are incorporated into unique items. Not quite the same as embroidering a “logo” onto a baseball cap!

The original designs and items are available for purchase through my ETSY shop.

Some examples of designs currently in progress – roadside foxgloves from a trip to the Oregon coast, the fresh blooms of plumeria from Maui, images of fairies and gnomes in garden settings – perhaps with a special “extra” design element.

Recently I had the opportunity to view the color slides that a dear auntie had taken on her trip to Europe in the mid-50′s. The images from Poland, Holland and Switzerland have added to my interest in developing some unique embroidery designs and products that incorporate these designs and images.
